If you’re a tax preparer, you want to offer your clients the easiest, fastest, most convenient way to file their taxes. That means that if you haven’t yet qualified as an authorized e-file provider, there’s no time to waste.
This will allow you to file your clients’ federal returns electronically, which is easier, more secure, and will get them their refund sooner.
Here’s how to qualify.
1. Apply
Applying is easy; simply fill out an authorized e-file provider application online via IRS.gov. You don’t even have to do it all in one sitting, as you can save your progress and come back later.
Here’s how to apply:
Sign into your account or create a new one through the e-Services e-file application
Enter your firm’s ID information
Add information about all of the principal and responsible officials in your firm
Select the e-file provider option
Choose “Electronic Return Originator”
If you’re certified or licensed (for example, if you’re a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney), add information about your current professional status
2. Get fingerprinted
If you’re not licensed or certified, you’ll need to make an appointment with an IRS-authorized vendor to get your fingerprints taken. You can schedule an appointment from the e-file application summary page, and there’s no charge.
If you already have a license or certificate, you can skip this step.
3. Take a suitability check
After the IRS processes your application, they’ll perform a suitability check, which involves checking your:
Credit
Tax compliance
Criminal background
Prior non-compliance with IRS e-file requirements
This process can take up to 45 days. Once you’re approved, you’ll receive an acceptance letter in the mail, which will include your Electronic Filing Identification number.
Then you’re all set!
